Pacific Electric Cars; A Pictorial Journey 1911-1953
By David Coscia and Joseph Strapac
The Pacific Electric Railway, organized in 1901-02 by Henry Huntington and carried on after 1911 by a new corporation of the same name, owned by the Southern Pacific, was closely aligned with Southern California’s history and economic development. This book addresses the forty-two years -1911 to 1953- that the “new” Pacific Electric Railway operated electric-powered passenger and freight trains in southern California. The authors had access to extensive photo files illustrating PE cars and their operating environment and selected the most effective for use in this book, with three major goals: to illustrate all the major classes of cars and locomotives acquired by the new PE after 1911 (as well as providing representative images of “legacy” cars inherited from predecessors), to provide detailed, informative picture captions that can both stand on their own and provide the seeds for future research. Hard cover.
